Data maturity framework for the not-for-profit sector

Version 2.1, January 2022

This Data Maturity Framework has been developed specifically for the not-for-profit sector.

It presents the five stages of progress in data maturity for organisations (Unaware, Emerging, Learning, Developing, and Mastering) across each of the seven key themes: (Data, Tools, Leadership, Skills, Culture, Uses and Analysis).

The framework forms the basis of our online Data Maturity Assessment tool, designed to help not-for-profits assess where they are on the journey to data maturity, and what to focus on next. Try the free or paid for versions.

Version control

The Data Maturity Framework was created by Data Orchard CIC. This version (version 2.1) was published in January 2022 and replaces version 2 (published October 2019), and version 1 created in partnership with DataKind UK in January 2017.

How you can use the framework

The framework is freely available for non-profit use licensed under Creative Commons Licence: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

This means you may:
Copy and redistribute the framework in any medium or format and remix, transform, and build upon the framework.

We encourage you to do all of this.

So long as you:
Attribute Data Orchard CIC as the source of the original and distribute your remixed, or built-upon version under the same license as the original.

And you must not:
Use the material for commercial purposes or apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
